Chi-Village

The work of Chi-Village is deeply inspired by a commitment to fostering safe, positive spaces for Black individuals to engage in self-reflection, learn wellness practices, and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit. Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, Chi-Village emerged as a response to the urgent need for healing, unity, and cultivating spaces for art & cultural events within the Black community. The organization’s inception, marked by a festival that served as a declaration of commitment to honoring ancestors and showcasing community talents, laid the foundation for its mission of cultural resilience and empowerment.

The organization draws inspiration from the enduring legacy of Black Chicago pioneers and the communal bonds among its members, many of whom have grown up together participating in cultural and educational programs. Ancestors such as Ann Ward, Dr. Conrad Worrill, and Nagheree Sutton symbolize the rich history of collaboration and mutual support within the community, which lays the foundation for Chi-Village’s mission.

Chi-Village programs, such as the “Viberaiser” series and the upcoming expansion “Viberaiser: Walk It Like We Talk It,” aim to foster emotional, mental, and physical health within African diasporic communities in the Chicagoland area. This expansion of the “Viberaiser” program combines wellness with environmental stewardship featuring a monthly wellness workshop followed by guided tours through historic neighborhoods, concluding at a local farmers’ market where participants will receive vouchers to support local growers.

The core of Chi-Village’s inspiration lies in uniting the Black community in safe and uplifting spaces, encouraging self-reflection, collective building, cooperative economics, and holistic renewal. Chi-Village programs address long-standing racial disparities and injustices, equipping individuals with tools for emotional healing from systemic traumas and empowering them to advocate for justice and equitable access to resources.

Chi-Village is driven by a commitment to healing, unity, and progress within the African diaspora. Through its impactful programs and events, the organization seeks to cultivate a vibrant future where people of African descent thrive and contribute to the collective advancement of the community.
