“Welcome to Chicago” Commemorative Button & Poster Design Competition for Chicago-area High School Students

Call for Entries and Competition Rules

Chicago is hosting the 2024 Democratic National Convention this August. The Democratic National Convention Host Committee invites Chicago-area high school students to submit an original artwork inspired by the prompt – “Welcome to Chicago.”

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) has been held every four years since 1832 to officially nominate a Democratic candidate for President & Vice President of the United States. All artworks submitted to the competition will be reviewed by a panel of judges. One piece of artwork will be selected as the winner and used on commemorative buttons and/or posters that will be distributed and/or sold to the public by the Host Committee. The awarded student will receive a $200 gift certificate and two (2) credentials for one day of the convention (running August 19-22nd). Runner-up finalists will have their artwork featured digitally at official convention venues and a $100 Visa gift card.

Students are encouraged to consider the following questions when submitting their artwork:

What or who makes Chicago unique?
How would you capture the essence of Chicago? Certain colors, smells, tastes, places?
How do you see yourself in the city?

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENTER: All Chicago-area high school students (Graduating seniors are eligible to apply.)

ENTRY DEADLINE: Monday, June 17th @ 5:00 PM CT

Artwork must be submitted in in a print-ready format following the Entry Guidelines, along with the release form and artistic description using the submission form below.

Submit print-ready artwork files and Student Information Release Form (with signatures from the student, parent, guardian) no later than 5:00 PM CT on Monday, June 17, 2024



  • Each student can upload one artwork.
  • All artwork must be original.
  • Types of artworks accepted include drawing, painting, digital illustration, photography, collage, or 2D mixed media. Video is not accepted. AI is not permitted
  • In the application, students will be asked to upload a high-resolution photo of their artwork.
  • The uploaded image must be 300 dpi.
  • BUTTON DESIGNS: Artwork must be print-ready and formatted to 3″ x 3” OR high-res CMKY pdf file
  • POSTER DESIGNS: artwork must be print-ready, high-res CMKY file, and formatted either horizontal or vertical
  • In addition to the image, students will be asked to submit a short paragraph describing their artwork, specifically the “why” inspiration of the work and how they created it.
  • Students will be asked to provide the name of their high school and their current grade level.
  • In addition to submitting an original artwork, the application includes a “Student Information Release Form” that will need to be printed, signed, and uploaded by a guardian for students under 18 years of age, or by the student for students 18 and over.


  • Any currently enrolled full-time student at any public or private high school in the Chicago Metropolitan is eligible to submit an entry.
  • All entries must be original in concept, design, and execution.
  • Any entry that is in violation of the competition rules will not be accepted.
  • Entries are limited to one piece of art per student and must include the “Student Information Release Form” (with signatures from the student and parent or guardian.
  • Entries may not contain any political or partisan content, references to any political party or candidate, or hateful, religious, discriminatory, or sexually explicit language or imagery. Any entry with such content will l be disqualified.


  • The DNC reserves the right to display the Work(s) or all of the Work(s) provided by the Artist in connection with marketing, social media, and any publicity needed for the project. DNC hereby granted an irrevocable, perpetual, and assignable license to display the Work and show the Work in a digital or pictorial format for promotional purposes or advertising purposes in any and all media now known or hereafter devised.
  • The Work will be owned by the DNC and the DNC may sell, use, store, use for profit, merchandise, dispose of or otherwise control the Work in such manner as they may determine, subject to Artist’s copyright in the Work. Artworks are subject to cropping, formatting, and other alterations to fit within the button shape and any alterations to the artwork composition are at the discretion of the DNC and will not need pre-approval by the artist.


  • Prizes to be awarded to the winner:
    • $200 gift certificate
    • Two (2) credentials for one day of the convention (running August 19-22nd)
  • Runner-up finalists prizes:
    • Artwork featured digitally at official convention venues
    • $100 Visa gift card
  • Odds of winning a prize depend on the number and quality of eligible entries received. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, AND LOCAL TAXES ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECEIPT OR USE OF ANY PRIZE ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF WINNER.
  • All prizes will be awarded. The prize may be forfeited and awarded to an alternative winner if two (2) attempts to contact the winner by phone and/or e-mail are not successful.
  • Prizes are not transferable. No substitutions or exchanges of any prizes will be permitted, except that the Host Committee reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value for any prize.
  • All prizes are awarded “AS IS” and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose


  • The Competition and these Official Rules will be governed, construed, and interpreted under the laws of the State of Illinois United States of America, without regard to its or any other jurisdiction’s choice of law provisions.
  • Entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and by the decisions of the Host Committee, which are final and binding in all respects.
  • Any provision of these Official Rules deemed unenforceable will be enforced to the extent permissible, and the remainder of these Official Rules will remain in effect.
  • Host Committee reserves the right to change these Official Rules at any time, in its sole discretion, and to suspend or cancel the Competition or any entrant’s participation in the Competition should viruses, bugs, unauthorized human intervention, or other causes beyond the Host Committee’s control affect the administration, security or proper play of the Competition, or the Host Committee otherwise becomes (as determined in its sole discretion) incapable of running the Competition as planned.
  • Entrants who violate these Official Rules, violate any law, rule or regulation in connection with participation in the Competition, tamper with the operation of the Competition, or engage in any conduct that is detrimental or unfair to the Host Committee, the Convention, the Competition or any other entrant (in each case as determined in the Host Committee’s sole discretion) are subject to disqualification from entry into the Competition.
